Commissioners Minutes - Tuesday, February 24, 2026

The Sheridan County Board of Commissioners met in regular session at 9:05 A.M. on February 24 2026. Commissioners Krotz, Messersmith and Kling were present along with Deputy Clerk Paige Rager, Treasurer Renee Thies, Clerk of District Court Carol Stouffer, Interim Road Superintendent Rod Norton and Todd Sherburn. Krotz stated that the meeting would be conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Nebraska Open Meeting Act. This meeting was posted on the official website February 19, 2026.

Kling made a motion to accept the agenda. Messersmith seconded the motion. With a roll call vote all voted aye.

Krotz made a motion to approve the minutes of 2-17-2026. Kling seconded the motion. With a roll call all voted aye.

Treasurer Renee Thies presented the board with the Pledged Security Report.

Interim Road Superintendent Rod Norton was present to give an update on the road department and on-going projects.
At 9:30 A.M. the board opened two bids for the contract hauling of ¾“ base course red rock from South Dakota. Hauler requirements include at least 3 trucks or approximately 6 loads per working day.
The bid from Wolken Trucking LLC of Rushville, NE stated $18/ton based on 28-ton loads. The bid from Sherburn Trucking LLC of Chadron, NE stated 0.189/ton per mile – 3 trucks or 6 loads per working day.
The bids will be reviewed, and a decision will be at the March 10th Commissioner Meeting 

At 9:30 A.M. Val Jasante, representative for Congressman Adrian Smith was present to give an update on recent activities in DC.

Building and Grounds Superintendent Jeff Davis was present to give an update on the open house keeping positions that have been advertised. He has only had one applicant. The applicant is not seeking a full-time position. It was discussed and the board told Davis to hire the applicant as a part-time employee and to continue the search for a full-time applicant.

Sheriff Jeff Brewer was present to give the board an update.

The board reviewed a rural subdivision request, of less than 10 acres, for Micaela Chitty. Kling made a motion to approve Resolution #2026-4 approving the subdivision request for Micaela Chitty. Messersmith seconded the motion. With a roll call vote all voted aye.

Public Comment: Treasurer Renee Thies proposed the idea of a staff refrigerator and possible break room. The board supported Thies’ idea and gave approval to move forward.
