Commissioners Proceedings Statement - Tuesday, February 24, 2026
The Sheridan County Board of Commissioners (BOC) met on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at the County Courthouse. Notice of the meeting was published in the Sheridan County Journal Star and on the County website, sheridancounty.ne.gov. The meeting was open to the public and conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Nebraska Open Meetings Act. Present were Chairman James Krotz, Commissioners Dan Kling and Bruce Messersmith, Deputy Clerk Paige Rager, Treasurer Renee Thies and Clerk of the District Court Carol Stouffer.

There was no business for the Board of Equalization (BOE).

Interim Road Superintendent Rod Norton reported that mild temperatures and a bit of moisture have made it possible to resume grading, and the gravel trucks are still running.

At 9:30 the Commissioners opened two bids for the contract hauling 10,000 tons or more of ¾” base course red rock from South Dakota. Haulers must be able to provide at least 3 trucks or approximately 6 loads per working day. Bids were received from Wolken Trucking LLC of Rushville and Sherburn Trucking LLC of Chadron. Consideration of the bids was tabled until March 10 at 9:30 a.m. to allow time for the Commissioners and the Superintendent to review the details of the bids.

Val Jasante, field representative for Congressman Adrian Smith, appeared to report on recent activities in D.C. The Commissioners asked Jasante to communicate their concern about the damage that tariffs were doing to Nebraska agriculture.

Building Superintendent Jeff Davis reported that he had one applicant for the position of housekeeper, the person is not seeking a full-time position. The Board told Davis to hire the person as a part-time employee and to continue to search for a full-time applicant while he and the Board consider how to re-configure department staffing.

The BOC considered and approved a request for the subdivision of a rural parcel of less than ten acres for Micaela Chitty.

The Commissioners scheduled a road trip with the Road Superintendent on March 3 to inspect the project sites on the one-and-six-year road plan.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the BOE/BOC will be Tuesday, March 10. The minutes of this and all meetings of the Board of Commissioners will be available to the public at the office of the Sheridan County Clerk and now are available online at sheridancounty.ne.gov.
