Commissioners Proceedings Statement - Tuesday, December 16, 2025
The Sheridan County Board of Commissioners (BOC) met on Tuesday December 16, 2025, at the County Courthouse. Notice of the meeting was published in the Sheridan County Journal Star and on the County website sheridancounty.ne.gov. The meeting was open to the public and conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Nebraska Open Meetings Act. Present were Chairman James Krotz, Commissioners Dan Kling and Bruce Messersmith, Clerk Sindy Coburn, Clerk of the District Court Carol Stouffer, and Assessor Tina Skinner.

There was no business for the Board of Equalization.

The Board of Commissioners (BOC) audited and approved claims for payment totaling $125,688.

The Board voted to increase the cash in lieu of health insurance payments for qualified county employees to $600/month.

Interim Road Superintendent Rod Norton reported that with the continuing good weather the gravel trucks are hauling and the motor-graders are grading.
The bridge inspector’s reports arrived yesterday, and Norton is now in the process of deciphering them.

Budget Consultant Caleb Johnson joined the meeting via telephone to discuss the developing resolution to set the salaries for elected officials during the 2026-2030 term. Johnson recommended a base salary for 2026, and an annual increase based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for each succeeding year. The Board hopes to iron out a few details and have a resolution ready for the vote on December 23.

At 11:00 a.m. the Board opened a hearing on roadside mowing charges. Only one landowner appeared to protest their assessment and, on the basis of evidence presented, the BOC voted to strike their charge from the list. Eleven other landowners did not appear or otherwise protest, and the BOC approved a resolution to levy the roadside mowing charges to their respective taxes.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the BOE/BOC will be Tuesday, December 23. The minutes of this and all meetings of the Board of Commissioners will be available to the public at the office of the Sheridan County Clerk and now are available online at sheridancounty.ne.gov.
