Commissioners Proceedings Statement - Tuesday, October 22, 2024
The Sheridan County, Nebraska Board of Equalization (BOE) and Board of Commissioners (BOC) met on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at the County Courthouse in Rushville. Notice of the meeting was published on the county website sheridancounty.ne.gov. The meeting was open to the public and a ZOOM connection was also available. Present were Chairman James Krotz, Commissioners Dan Kling and Bruce Messersmith, County Clerk Sindy Coburn, Treasurer Renee Thies and Clerk of the District Court Carol Stouffer.

There was no business for the Board of Equalization.

The Commissioners audited and approved salary claims and signed claim checks.

Interim Road Superintendent Rod Norton presented a detailed list of the 10 pieces of equipment declared surplus last week. The equipment is to be sold at auction on Big Iron. Interested parties can find detailed information on the items at bigiron.com.
After some considerable discussion with Norton, Treasurer Rene Thies, Sheriff Jeff Brewer and Chief Deputy Everett Langford, the Board decided to purchase all the replacement E-911 road signs still needed at this time using monies from the Local Assistance and Tribal Consistency Fund. The estimated cost is $30,000.
Norton reported that construction projects have been concluded for the year and crews will resume the 5-day/8-hour schedule beginning November 12.

Treasurer Renee Thies presented, and the Board accepted, her report on pledged securities from depository banks.
Thies presented a proposed resolution to strike the personal property taxes on five mobile homes and 3 items of other property on which the Treasurer and Sheriff have not been able to collect. Because it appears impossible to collect the taxes, which total $3042.84, the resolution to “strike” from the tax list moves the properties to inactive status. Should circumstances change, the County could still collect those taxes.

Representatives from Eakes Office Equipment presented additional information on a proposed new telephone system. The BOC requested a cost comparison for outright purchase as opposed to a lease agreement. The Board is also considering a proposal from Great Plains Communication.

Interim Weed Superintendent Melissa Grover provided an update on Department activities.

The Commissioners, County Attorney Jamian Simmons and Grover met in closed session to discuss a matter of possible litigation. No action was taken.

The next meeting of the BOE/BOC is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12 at 9:00 a.m. The minutes of this and all meetings of the Board of Commissioners will be available to the public at the office of the Sheridan County Clerk and now are available online at sheridancounty.ne.gov. All meetings of the Board of Commissioners are held in compliance with Nebraska Open Meetings Act and the public is always welcome.
