Commissioners Minutes - Monday, July 22, 2019

The Sheridan County Board of Commissioners met in regular session at 9 A.M.  in the Commissioners Office, Courthouse.  All members present.  Paul stated that the meeting would be conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Nebraska Open Meeting Act.  

Messersmith made a motion to accept the agenda.  Krotz seconded the motion.  All voted aye.

Krotz made a motion to approve the minutes of 7-15-2019.  Messersmith seconded the motion.  All voted aye.

The board audited and approved salary claims:   General $214,742.94;   Road $96,951.10;   Weed $6,171.05   TOTAL $317,865.09.    Claim checks were signed.

Sheridan County Treasurer, Renee Thies met with the board to ask for an over/short petty cash fund.  Thies explained that there are times when someone mails in a payment and are short or long by a few cents.  It doesn't make sense to send it back so they are requesting a petty cash fund.    Messersmith made a motion to adopt Resolution #2019-8 establishing a petty cash fund of $50.00 for the Sheridan County Treasurer's Office.  Krotz seconded the motion.  With a roll call vote all voted aye.

Lynn Webster and Pat O'Brien of the Upper Niobrara White Natural Resources District and Tom Kuester, Road Superintendent met with the board to discuss how to repair two flood control structures damaged by heavy rain this Spring/Summer County roads run across both of these structures.   O'Brien expressed that the NRCS has monies set to help fund the cost of repairs.  Kuester will meet with the NRD representatives and an engineer to prepare an estimate.

Deputy County Attorney Jamian Simmons met with the board to discuss a change in the method by which the county selects a Public Defender.  At the present time voters elect the Public Defender for a four year term.   Another option would be for the County Board to appoint a Defender nominated by a commission.  No action was taken but the board asked Simmons to further explore the process.

Attorney Dennis King representing Gordon Memorial Hospital appeared to inquire whether the county would allocate any tax monies for the Hospital this coming year.  The board informed King that the county would not allocate any tax monies for the hospital in the coming year.   Official notification will be given in August.

Deputy Sheriff Everett Langford reported on pending modifications to patrol vehicles to install safety screens and terminals.
