One of the aspects of the Eden Alternative, is personal transformation. Staff members examine their own reactions and feelings regarding situations that happen not only at the facility, but in their own personal lives. These changes are personal decisions each staff member makes for themselves and as we improve our feelings of self-worth the facility will benefit from these changes by having staff who feel and act confidentiality in themselves and project those feelings of good will upon other staff and our elders.
A few weeks ago, Lori Pankonin had a article in the Imperial Republican regarding a movement to eradicate complaining. This movement started by Reverend Will Bowen of Christ Church Unity in Kansas City, MO. He suggested to his congregation in 2006 they wear purple bracelets as a visual reminder to keep themselves from complaining. This idea has exploded around the world and nearly 5 million purple bracelets have been sent to more than 80 countries, according to the website acomplaintfreeworld.org
Imperial Manor, Parkview-Heights has decided to participate in this project. We have ordered bracelets and several staff have chosen to wear one. You begin to wear the bracelet on either wrist. When you catch yourself complaining, gossiping or criticizing, you move the bracelet to the other wrist. The goal is to go 21 days without any complaining, gossiping or criticizing. Scientist believe it takes 21 days to form a new habit. The bracelets are a tool to help remind us of how well we are creating our life with positive intentions.

The website states that refraining from complaining doesn't necessarily mean putting up with bad quality or bad behavior. When you stick to the facts of a situation and remain calm, you can correct situations with kindness. If the lumber yard orders you the wrong item, or if a waiter brings you something you didn't order, you are not complaining by asking for the situation to be fixed. The website also states that by eliminating complaining from your life you will enjoy happier relationships, better health and greater prosperity.
Positive thinking is beneficial to all of us. It affects how we act & how we respond to others and situations. It takes practice, to go about thinking postiviely, but here are some thoughts.

Positive thinking is beneficial to all of us. It affects how we act & how we respond to others and situations. It takes practice, to go about thinking postiviely, but here are some thoughts.
- What we think of ourselves is more important than what others think of us.
- Experience is not what happens to us, it is how we perceive what has happened to us.
- Happiness you can share with everyone
- Remember to smile & laugh everyday
- Don't be afraid to ask for help
- A happy heart beats longer
- Do a good deed for someone everyday
- Everyday try and strengthen your mind
- Tell people how much you appreciate them
- Hug & kiss those you love everyday
- Remember you are not alone
- When you smile, the world smiles with you
- Pray

Negative thinking hinders our ability to be at peace with ourselves & others. When we stop complaining, we hear less complaining from others and we will have less conflict in our relationships. We start to see our blessings more clearly and start seeing the good in people & situations verses what to complain & gossip about. We develop compassion.
This is a really great gift each staff member is giving to themselves, thank you to all who are participating.
