Should you have a reservation?

Should you have a reservation?Do you need a reservation?Probably not but it never hurts and is usually a good idea. Reservations are encouraged but not required at Cattleman's Steakhouse. Having them may save you a wait in the hall. Why isn't your table ready? You made a reservation and showed up right on time but your table isn't ready. Why? There are several possible reasons. In order to be profitable a restaurant must use tables more than once during the evening. Lets say your reservation was for six people at 7:30. The person that took the reservation looked at the list and saw a reservation for eight at 5:00. Surely that table can be used at 7:30. Wrong, it was Uncle Fred's birthday, they had out of town guests, were 45 minutes late getting there, and wanted to sit and visit. The table you finally got was the 6 top that was used at 6:30 and Uncle Fred's party is still there after you have eaten and left. Do you have a reservation? Why did she ask if you had a reservation? There were several empty tables, and she seated you right away even though you said, "No." They need to know if you have a reservation so they can remove your name from the list. You would be surprised how many times a table is held for a party that has already been seated because no one asked. "But," you say "I've been coming here for two years and have known the waitress longer than that, why did she ask me if I had a reservation." "My last name is right there on the sheet." If you weren't asked you should have been. Why? Take the instance where there is a reservation under the name Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Smith arrive a few minutes early and are seated at the last available table. Right on time Mr. and Mrs. James Smith arrive and say, "We have a reservation." It happens, even with uncommon names. Why do some restaurants not accept reservations? While reservations can be a useful tool, they can also limit the number of patrons served. If a restaurant has a waiting area and a large clientele they will likely be able to serve more people if they don't take reservations. When there are no reservations a table can be bussed and reused as soon as it is vacated. If you take reservations you may have to hold an empty table if it doesn't look like one will open up prior the the reservation time. |
